Mayor Mark A. Lauretti
A graduate of Ohio University, Mark also holds a M.S. degree from Syracuse University. He and his wife Andee have four children, all in the Shelton school systems.
The Lauretti administration has made specific promises to the residents of Shelton and has kept each one.
Educational spending has increased 75% since he was elected to office in 1991. And an additional 70 million dollars has been spent on capitol improvements, including building a new Intermediate School.
In 1991, Downtown was vacant storefronts and derelict buildings. Phase 1of redevelopment has been completed. The sad remains of the B. F. Goodrich Fire were cleared after 25 years and replaced with a five acre permanent green space with a Riverwalk, a Veterans Memorial and a Farmers Market. Utilities were put underground and the area prepared for Phase 2 that is ongoing. State and Federal grant money has been leveraged to accomplish much without a drain on city resources. Blighted buildings have been removed and private money has been invested in the rehabilitation of buildings from one end of Howe Avenue to the other. A non-profit senior housing project was completed. We are seeing the start of the adaptive reuse of an old factory into market priced condominiums that are another important step for the Downtown.
Over a thousand acres of Open Space has been purchased. This land is being used to develop trails and to improve the overall quality of life.
Equipment and vehicles have been purchased for the police and fire departments and improvements have been made in all areas of recreation.
A careful balance of economic growth has allowed us to accomplish these while maintaining the lowest tax rate in the area. The City has its highest credit rating ever. It allows us to borrow money at very low rates, yet our debt service is one of the lowest in the State.
